Library Practice Course Description
Library Practice is an elective course of study that provides instruction and practice in the organization and function of a school library. A common misconception is that the scope of the course is that of a student office assistant, when the course has a curriculum, course objectives, and much to be learned, practiced and evaluated.
The course of study is divided into an introduction and 5 units of instruction, each connected with a common theme:
Introduction to Library Practice
Unit 1: Basic Library Skills and Function
Unit 2: Library Catalog
Unit 3: Print Reference
Unit 4: Databases and E-Books
Unit 5: The Internet
Unit 1: Basic Library Skills and Function
Unit 2: Library Catalog
Unit 3: Print Reference
Unit 4: Databases and E-Books
Unit 5: The Internet
In the introduction, the student will choose a topic of study that is common to the high school curriculum. This topic will provide a theme to all their work and lessons; from the section of the library they are required to maintain, to developing a comprehensive list of research sources. Many skills will be applied across the units so they are reinforced and developed over a variety of applications.
· Library classification and organization using Dewey and subject headings
· Library terminology
· Library technology, procedures and maintenance
· Evaluating materials for their quality and relevance to a research topic
· Organization of reference materials and how to access the information contained in them
· Accessing, selecting, and using district/school provided databases and e-books
· The effective use of Internet search tools, such as Google
· Evaluating web sites for their quality and relevance to a research topic
· Several Language Arts skills and standards for reading and writing will be addressed through the activities provided
· Creation of one Book-Talk and one Book-Review
As this is an elective, all work will be done “in class” with the student having the option to also work during non-class time (nutrition, lunch, after school) or at home.
